Thing 10 Qualifications

I have been working in libraries since 1993 but in 2006, I decided that it was high time I got my Master's Degree in Library Science. My courses were entirely online through the University of Wisconsin at Madison http://polyglot.lss.wisc.edu/slis/. I attended two full years of classes including foundation courses, cataloging courses, reference courses, and courses specific to public and academic libraries. I also did a practicum of 120 hours with a public library near my current employer. It was a hard two years, but I graduated in 2008. All my instructors were excellent. I feel I received an excellent education. An education that prepared me for many successful years as a librarian. My future plans are two take courses through the library school for continuing education, continue to attend webinars and keep my membership in the Iowa Library Association up to date.

Cpd thing 8 and 9 Ever Note and Google Calendar

I really like Evernote for clipping websites. I have been crazy busy the last few days, but I have played around with clipping webpages with Evernote. I maintain a bookmarking service that contains evaluated websites for specific subjects. I like Evernote because I can clip the page and make notes. Later, I can refer back to the notebooks to decide if I am going to add a specfic site. I have not explored Evernote beyond this point, but I will in the very near future. I believe Evernote has a new fan!

I have used Google calendar in the past and liked it. However, my institution is involved heavily in sharing their Outlook calendars.

Reflection CPD23 Thing 5

I have heard the term reflection at some of the conferences I have attended spoken by wise librarians. I have always known that reflection would be a good thing for me to do after conferences and other professional development events I attend.

I am not sure I know the operations of Twitter but "give up" are not words in my vocabulary. I think Twitter is a good tool to use to stay up to date. I think Twitter may be faster than my Google feeds reader. I love my feeds reader too, I subscribe to many feeds which I read on a daily or sometimes weekly basis. The Academic Librarian is one and Librarian in Black is another I enjoy reading. It would be good for me to stay in touch with other Community College Librarians and University Librarians. I know I would learn about many new resources that I can use to help our students find information.
Ok. I am still trying to get this Twitter thing. I tried to join the twitter list for 23 things, but I am not sure if I got through. I think I need to read up on Twitter! On the positive side, I will be adding a picture today or tomorrow on my LinkedIn page. Slow but sure!

My Personal Brand

I have heard of personal branding but did not really know what it was. I have spent some of the day today looking over some personal brands by the experts, i.e. Bobbi Newman.

Judging from the information I have read, I know I need to make a plan to develop my personal brand and make some changes on my networks. I am listed on LinkedIn and Facebook. I am not completely happy with my facebook page. I have this nagging feeling my personal life and professional life should emain separate. But, I think I need to get over that.
I am very interested to hear what others think of my LinkedIn and Facebook profiles. What do I need to change or add?

Thing 2

I have been reading some of the blogs. Many are really creative and have thoughtful posts. One person said many were like his-the bare essentials...that's me! Although I am a chatty cathy I often get too much on my plate at one time and try to get too much done. I need to slow down to take all this in! I am excited to read your blogs and to communicate with all of you. I saved the article about the things bloggers should never do. The article will be very helpful! Thank you! Linda

Hello

Hi
My name is Linda Nelson. I am a librarian at Scott Community College Library in Bettendorf, Iowa. I have been employed at the college since 1993 and received my master's Degree in 2008 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Although I have been blogging for awhile for our library I feel as though I am a newbie at writing blogs. Through this course, I hope to become more aware of the social tools our library can use to communicate with students. The best part is getting to know all of you and sharing ideas.
